Pasligh, Hendrik Arne ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Kaczmarski, Marcin (referee) ; Schlotti, Jivanta (referee)
MachineLearning-enhanceddigitalInformationOperationsofthePeople's Republic ofChinain the Republic ofKorea Hendrik Arne Pasligh Abstract This study addressesthe research question if, how and to what end the People'sRepublic of China (PRC) might deploy digital information operations enhanced by machine learning (ML) technology in and against the Republic of Korea (ROK). To do so, Ulrich Beck's risk society theory is employed as the theoretical framework, which provides valuable insights into the environment in which information operations are conducted today. This environment is susceptible to information operations on a qualitatively fundamentally different new level. Further, this study establishes a terminology of information operations, bringing clarity to several ill-defined terms that prevail within academic literature. A scenario will be built to visualise a potential PRC information operation against the ROK. The majority of the study seeksto identify and analyse the relevant factors for such a scenario, particularly focusing on PRC strategic interestsandROK vulnerabilities against information operations. This studyfinds that: It is very likely that ML-enhanced artificial agents will increasingly be able to pose as human beings in the digital world; it is very likely that historical issues betweenthe...
Assessing Tsai Ying-Wen's strategy in the South China Sea
Gragnani, Lucia ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Romancov, Michael (referee)
Taiwan has been generally considered a moderate player in the South China Sea's tense waters. Despite its low-profile policy, the Republic of China (ROC) has one of the most extensive territorial claims in the South China Sea, in accordance with its 1947 Constitution. The ROC's South China Sea policy is influenced by Cross-Strait relations, which are the main concern of any ROC administration. This thesis investigates Tsai Ying-wen's approach to the South China Sea by examining its interaction with the One China principle and looking at its interplay with the New Southbound Policy. It finds that Tsai Ying-wen's administration has further de-emphasized Taiwan's claims over the area, for both domestic and international reasons. This approach strategically fosters the maintenance of the status quo and paves the way for strengthening ties with Southeast Asian countries and maintaining the United States' support, partially confirming Waltz's neorealist approach.

Bolchová, Jitka ; Sýkora, Jan (advisor) ; Sehnálková, Jana (referee)
Thesis deals with urbanization policies of People's Republic of China during period from the end of civil war in 1949 till nowadays. It focuses in particular on the impact of reforms in the 70s of the 20th century. Period of the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution on one hand are characterized by massive industrialization, on the other, however by suppression of any urbanization processes. Furthermore, there is a central government-controlled migration of population from cities to the countryside through the Hukou system. Following the reforms in the 70s of the 20th century China opens to the outside world. It leads to a radical change of direction towards a socialist market economy. The main changes include a focus on economic prosperity and de-ideologization policy, China has opened to the Western world. Soon the positive effects of urbanization on economic prosperity and growth emerges. Urbanization is from now on supported through various central polices. One of the mechanisms leading to massive urbanization and consequently to economic growth is the release of the informal labor...

Kaňková, Michaela ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Pondělíček, Jiří (referee)
This Master's thesis is focusing on why the United States of America never ratified the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. It is analysing the prevailing arguments which were used in 1982, which led to President Ronald Reagan never ratifying the Convention. As well as why the same thing happened in 1994 when the United Nations agreed on an Update to the Convention. Then the thesis is focusing on crucial parts of the Convention, which are part of the arguments for or against the ratification of the Convention, as well as those which have a great influence on the American approach to the high seas. Furthermore, this thesis is trying to offer a current insight into the problematic of why the United States still did not ratify the Convention, despite the fact that they used the Convention as an explanation why they patron the high seas as well as the right of innocent passage. At the same time, the findings are then looked at from the perspective of the South China Sea, which is a region the United States monitor. This last part is attempting to do several things. First, it is explaining the issue of the South China Sea and the interest of the United States in it. Then it is looking at the way by which the United States try to promote their interests in the region on how the fact them...

It is a longitudinal research, studying the naval diplomatic activities carried out by the Chinese navy in the years of 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2020. The research draws from J.J. Analysing previously existing records of Chinese naval diplomatic activities, and examining reports from online news outlets, a new database is constructed for the purpose of this study. This research identifies that there is an expansion in the number and scope of activities throughout these years. It also identifies that the majority of China's naval diplomatic activities are supportive in their aim, while the preferred means are Escort Task Forces. Nevertheless, varying strategies are identified for the different geographical context. Lastly, some of the characteristics that make China's approach unique are determined to be its close integration with the broader foreign-policy mechanisms, its hierarchical...
